This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.
Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
